hm hire - the basics


When you hire a vehicle from us, you have the choice of Broadford or Portree. For a small fee we can also collect you from Kyle or Armadale. If you choose Portree, we can come and pick you up and take you back when the hire is finished. You will find links to the bus and ferry timetables on our contacts page. We try to make hiring a car from us as simple as possible, so here are the key points. Our full terms can be read here.

  • You have to be between 21 and 75 years of age
  • You have to hold a full driving licence: UK, EU, EEA or foreign
  • You have to held that licence for at least three years
  • You have to have a credit or UK debit card, to book a car
  • No major driving convictions in the UK or anywhere else *
  • Minimum of £750 damage excess on the insurance **
  • If you have been in the UK for more than 12 months you cannot drive on a foreign licence
Our insurance covers you for the following:
 
  • Loss of or damage to the vehicle from:
  • Accidental damage
  • Vandalism and malicious damage
  • Fire including self ignition, lightning & explosion
  • Theft or attempted theft or taking of the vehicle without permission
  • Your liability under the Road Traffic Acts for:
  • Death or injury to other people including passengers (unlimited)
  • Damage to property up to £2,000,000
  • Emergency treatment fees
  • Legal fees for representation at a coroners inquest, fatal accident enquiry or court of summary jurisdiction
  • Defence costs in prosecution for Manslaughter or death by reckless driving up to £5000
The insurance doesn't cover for:
 
  • Damage to Windscreen, Sunroof and windows
     
We ask that you bring the vehicle back to us with a full tank of fuel. If the vehicle isn't returned with a full tank, we will charge you £20 + the cost of the fuel + VAT to refill the tank. You have the option of paying an additional fee pre-hire to return the vehicle empty.
 

Charges
 
From £30 per day + VAT + insurance ***
 
Please note we are open between

08:30 to 17:00 Monday to Friday

At any other times vehicles are only available
for collection or return by prior arrangement.
 
 
A security deposit may be required when you hire the vehicle. This will be refunded on completion of hire. All hires must be paid by credit or debit card. We are sorry but cheques are not accepted.
* Check with us first as some minor offences will be acceptable to our insurance company.
